MODE AND MEDIAN
1. Mode
Can be understood as value / data which frequently arise. in other words the most data appear or be found within a group of data. Mode can also be categorized as - average for the data categories.
Example:
From a group of data hobby grade XI IPS 2 SMAN 7 Surabaya.
Subject | Frequency |
Soccer | 5 students |
Basketball | 6 students |
Volley | 3 students |
Read Novel | 3 students |
Singing | 2 students |
Shopping | 3 students |
Bowling | 1 student |
Badminton | 4 students |
Write Short Stories | 1 student |
Movie | 1 student |
From example we can infer the average student hobby XI IPS 2 SMAN 7 is basketball, because most data on basketball hobby.
2. Median
The median is one measure of centralization of data, that is, if a cluster of data are sorted from the smallest to the largest or the largest to the smallest, the observation is right in the middle when the amount of data is odd, or an average of two observations in the middle when an even number of observations.
Example :
- For odd data
For data 8, 7, 9. First the data are sorted into 7, 8, 9. So easy to know the median is 8.
- For even-numbered data
For the data 2, 8, 3, 4, 1, 8. First the data are sorted into 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 8. As the number of data observations is even, namely 6, then the median is located at an average of two values of observations in the middle of the third data and fourth data, the median is (3 +4) / 2 = 3.5.
